Post-Flood Ghost Town

IMG_0648newOver the past day or two, Prague’s recovery from the weekend’s flooding has meant ghostly empty streets. The metro isn’t running and only a few trams are making rounds around town. Despite the empty streets, those few working trams did allow for some pedestrian activity last night/evening. Cafés got some business, but for the most part, the majority of streets and shops weren’t experiencing a high population of people. The usually heavily touristy areas, like the castle/cathedral grounds had maybe but a couple of people pass through. Few cars zoomed down streets, and even less canines roamed around.

It was an odd sight/experience to walk from one street to another, around corners and through neighborhoods and not see or hear much of anything. The city of Prague closes down relatively early during normal days, but it almost seemed like the castle area was barely open before sunset yesterday. It was a solemnly calm display of Prague, and I’m glad I was able to experience it. However, once I arrived to my tram stop to head back to my apartment, the golden shine of street lamps revealed a cluster of people, of life-form, of breathing creatures other than myself. That was surprisingly exciting.
